ZD&T Enterprise Edition - Installing the License Server

IBM Z Development &Test Environment is the official IBM Mainframe emulation tool. zD&T is available in three editions: Personal Edition, Enterprise Edition and Parallel Sysplex Edition. This time, we will start by installing the license server of the Enterprise Edition version.

This edition can be managed by web tool (to install the emulator on other machines, distribute the disks, etc.). It also allows to install the zPDT emulator only (without the web tool).

 

Both options require to have a license server installed. If you install only the emulator, the license server must be in another machine. If you use the full version of Enterprise Edition (web administration), the license server can be on the same machine.

 

I will also separate the web tool from the license server, because, in my case, I don't have to pay for every system I have booted (my PC is the same) and I prefer to mess with the license server as little as possible.

 

In my case, I use VMware ESXi to have the virtualized systems in a PC (although it is advisable to have the license server in a physical server because if there was a change of hardware, the emulator would stop working).

 

For the systems I will use Ubuntu Desktop 18.04.4. I have chosen this version because, following zPDT's Redbook, it is compatible and should work correctly.

I'll start by installing the license server.

 

It is recommended to configure the machine's IP as static (if within our network we have DHCP configured) because we will have to connect to this server.

 

We copied the installation package to this machine. In my case, it is called ZDT_Install_EE_V12.0.5.0.tgz. Open a terminal and go to the path we copied it to.

 

Change the permissions to 775:

chmod 755 ZDT_Install_EE_V12.0.5.0.tgz

Decompress the file with the command:

tar -xzvf ZDT_Install_EE_V12.0.5.0.tgz

Run the program to do the installation:

./ZDT_Install_EE_V12.0.5.0.x86_64

The different options for installation will appear. In this case, i chose option 2 because my license is software based.

We chose option 1 - Install.

We read the license agreement and accept (if we agree).

We indicate if we want to install the dependencies. In my case, yes.

When the installation is complete, we need to look at the information that appears, as it is relevant.

 

To start the license server we must use the:

/usr/z1090/bin/uimserverstart

In this case, the server will start automatically and if we reboot the system, it should also start automatically.

To obtain the license, it is necessary to generate a file that will be sent to the IBM representative and return the license to us (or, depending on the type of agreement, we can also upload this file on the IBM Rational License Key Center website and generate the license).

/opt/IBM/LDK/request_license

In my case, I sent the ZIP file to IBM and waited for them to send me the license. After that, we will have to include that license in the license server. See below.

During the installation, the ibmsys1 user is created. We must change the password of this user using the command:

passwd ibmsys1

If we want to do another check to confirm that it is properly installed, we can use:

dpkg -l | grep zpdtldk

dpkg -l | grep zpdtuim

Once we have the license file, we must apply it to the license server..

 

To do this we go to the path “/opt/IBM/LDK”:

cd /opt/IBM/LDK

Now we will use the command "update_license" and the path of our license file. For example:

./update_license /home/jav/Escritorio/jav-virtual-machine_1596020876_update.zip

We can check the license status with the command:

./query_license

Finally, we will restart the UIM server. To do this, we log in with a non-root user (ibmsys1, for example) and go to the path "/usr/z1090/bin". Then we execute the command.

NOTE: If it is started, it must be stopped and started.

cd /usr/z1090/bin

./uimserverstop

./uimserverstart
